
Metformin comes as a tablet and an extended-release tablet to take by mouth. Metformin increases the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin. Most benefit from it. If the patient is taking Glucophage tablets, the starting dose is 500 mg daily with the evening meal. Glucophage does not increase the body's production of insulin.
